Emotie/Moeite of Compenseren deel 2 - Emotion/Effort or Compensation part 2

moeite heb om boven water te blijven;
moeite doe om wat ik voel te kunnen koppelen aan wat er gebeurt;
moeite heb om me bewust te worden van al die emoties;

We doen alsof....

I used to hear a compliment when I was told that I was very good at compensating.
Lately however I don’t see it as very positive anymore.
Compensating is something I’m good at, but it’s also hiding a piece of myself.
Hiding an essential part because you know it won’t be excepted by others.

Compensating is like acting while I (and many others with ASD) aren’t good actors.
It stands out without really been seen.
I’ve never encountered a NT before who told me: “hey, you’re compensating?!”.
Mostly you see them thinking (or you imagine you see them thinking): “she/he is acting strangely…that’s a weirdo…”.

It takes a lot of effort to compensate.
It’s about more than personality traits.
It’s also about emotions linked with social interactions.

I have some shortcomings on the verbal scale, but I compensate those with my writing and language skills.
I like language in general.

Yesterday someone send me an anagram.
In Dutch it’s about these 2 words: “emotie – moeite”.
In English this means: “emotion – effort” but unfortunately it’s not an anagram.
I don’t call it an anagram, but a “letterlink”: a link between letters and meanings.

Emotion is a key element throughout my life and this blog.
Dealing with emotions, learning how to recognize emotion, expressing emotions…

Effortless for most people without ASD.
Awful lot of effort for me.

Being understanding and sympathetic for the effort I do, is apparently difficult for people without ASD.
Most of the time they don’t even see how much trouble it costs me.
On the other hand they expect me to be sympathetic with their emotions on the spot.

So maybe I could say that dealing with emotions is difficult for both people with and without ASD. It’s just difficult on another level.

It’s hard to understand that emotions can costs so much effort.
I know I sometimes seem emotionless or dispassionate.
But that’s completely wrong.
I’m drowning in my emotions.
It takes a lot of effort to stay above the waves,
to connect what I feel to what is happening,
to acknowledge all those emotions
to except them and pronounce them.

Most people feel first and think later.
It’s the other way round for me and a lot of others with ASD.
When we see something, we think and reason about it before we feel it.
We are thinking our way into a situation.
We don’t feel our way into a situation.
We do empathize with others, but it’s on another level.
It takes more time to make the connection between what we see and think to our emotions.
It takes more time to show these emotions because they are felt much later.

When you are confronted with a lot of emotions without knowing where they are coming from or what they are, it takes again an awful lot of effort to deal with them.
To find the origin we start thinking and reasoning again.
In the mean time we try to compensate that shortcoming so you (the people without ASD) won’t see this.

We act….
We all have our own way to find the note or the recipe in the archives in our head to deal with that specific emotion and to show sympathy.

It’s hardly surprising that we suffer almost always from a bursting head….
